Hengyi Industries plants 500 new trees in 7th Reforestation Project

Biodiversity Park, Berakas Forest Reserve, 16 May 2024 – Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd (Hengyi Industries) held its 7th Reforestation Project initiative where 500 trees were planted across 1125 square meters in the forest reserve. This initiative aligns with the company’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, in line with Wawasan Brunei 2035’s goal of creating a sustainable environment and contributing to the global goal of Carbon Net Zero.

The initiative was also in collaboration with Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD), which sponsored 200 of the total trees planted. The collaboration underscores the shared vision between Hengyi Industries and BIBD for promoting environmental sustainability in the nation.

Present as the guest of honour is Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Muhammad Juanda bin Haji Abdul Rashid, the Minister of Development. Also present were Yang Mulia Awang Haji Mohamad Azmi bin Haji Mohd Hanifah, the Deputy Minister (Energy) at the Prime Minister’s Office; His Excellency Dr. Xiao Jianguo, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Brunei Darussalam; Yang Mulia Awang Junaidi bin Haji Masri, BIBD Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO); Yang Mulia Puan Hajah Joanna binti Haji Yacob, Acting Assistant Vice Chancellor (Corporate and Administration) of Universiti Brunei Darusslam (UBD),; and Yang Mulia Ustaz Haji Md Jaafar bin Haji Johari, Acting Principal of Politeknik Brunei (PB).

The event began with an awareness talk about the importance of reforestation by the Forestry Department to the volunteers from UBD, PB, and Institute Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) who are currently interning at Hengyi Industries. Upon the arrival of the guest of honour, a safety briefing and the recital of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat were conducted. Following this, Mr. Chen Lian Cai, the CEO of Hengyi Industries, delivered his opening remarks, extending a warm welcome to the guests and volunteers. After a group photo session, the guest of honour, alongside the Deputy Minister (Energy) at the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Brunei Darussalam, the CEO of Hengyi Industries, and BIBD Managing Director and CEO officiated the event with a tree-planting session by each of the distinguished guests.

About 100 volunteers comprising of management and staff from Hengyi Industries, BIBD, Department of Energy, and Damai Holdings; council members from the Chinese Enterprises Association in Brunei (CEAB); and Hengyi Industries’ interns from UBD, PB, and IBTE participated in the tree planting event. Three (3) native species – Kapur Peringgi, Kapur Paya and Meranti Sipit Laut – were selected to be planted for their resilience to thrive in the sandy soil and drier conditions of the Berakas Forest Reserve.

Since its inception in May 2019, Hengyi Industries has planted and maintained a total of 4010 trees across 3.6 hectares of land under the Reforestation Project, making it one of the company’s largest endeavours under the Hengyi One Planet initiative. Hengyi Industries is also currently developing a solar energy project on Pulau Muara Besar (PMB), which has been researched and validated on.

Aligned with Brunei Darussalam’s environmental objectives, the project aims to protect and preserve the natural environment of Brunei Darussalam and support our nation’s commitments under the Paris Agreement, and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) through the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation Programme (REDD+).
